Hey there! I'm John and this is John's Drams, a channel exploring the world of whisky. I'm a bar manager by trade and so want to offer up some of the things I've learned about alcoholic beverages to the masses of the internet (and also try out some new stuff too!)
Whisky, gin, vodka and everything else should be enjoyed responsibly - and this is a place to help do that.

Bonnington Single Cask Inaugural Release | 52.3% A.B.V | Lowland Scotch Whisky Review. A whisky that's near where I live! Grand Macnish

In a world of cheap blended whiskies, is it possible to stand out for being better than terrible? Today we have the turn of Grand Macnish, a blended whisky from 1863 and something of a change of pace from the heavily advertised gasoline of other, better known blends. Lagavulin 16 Whisky Review | John's Drams
Переглядів 2634 місяці тому
Lagavulin 16, it's a stalwart of the Scotch Whisky world, and a classic Islay malt that's fallen out of favour with the enthusiast community in the last few years - of recent times, the Lagavulin 8 has seemed like a better value, if very different, proposition from the distillery. A current trend with Lagavulin 16 is to see it at a knockdown price to tempt buyers - and it certainly worked on me...

I went from Edinburgh to Tomintoul and back in 24 hours and came back with something special.
This guy ranks 18 last and doesn’t watch GOT? We are definitely not in the same tribe. JW 18 is one of my favorites, followed by green, then blue. The rest I ignore. But again….different people have different tastes.
I’ll start with I didn’t complain about the light but I must say it’s great to see your handsome face in better light ( compliment not stalking please don’t block 🤣) love the videography much better. Fantastic fantastic fantastic again. Really entertaining, really informative love it. Some really interesting whiskey fantastic and I love your knowledge 🥃👍
Blended whiskys was here before the malts are you a malt snob?
Interesting to hear a bit of the 'other' side of whisky collecting. From behind the bar, as it were. Have found several extraordinary whisky bars over this past year, one in Toronto and another in a small town called Meaford, on the Bruce Peninsula northwest of T.O.. Tried some beauties in both. Favourites were a 25 Brora 1975-2001 IB by Douglas McGibbon & Co. (just...WOW), and a Craigellachie 19 1993-2012 (G&McP bottling). Mortlach 22 and an unpeated Caol Ila both also excellent. None of these drams, by the way, were cheap. But hey, you only live once! Enjoyed the run through of your list. Great to see an upload from you, as always...and also nice to see you looking somewhat less dark and blurry 😉 Cheers John! 🥃🥃 Marian 🇨🇦
I think you mean the former rather than the latter.
Love the new lightening. Excellent!
That was good! What auction sites would you recommend?
It was really lovely Vlog John. I watched you with pleasure, some brilliant whiskies. I need to explore some SFTC Edradour. Can confirm, Ardnahoe is Amazing. While watching i sipping new Ardna the Midgie and nose is nice but im not convinced for the taste yet, its neck poor, maybe thats why. Back to your video we need more stuff like this with reviews of some these gorgeous bottles you talked about. Cheers and Slàinte 😁🥂🥂🥂🙋♂️
Love the segment John!! This is a lovely dram!! Love your videos! 🙂
What a list! So many gems there and so many I will never get. Still, fun to hear about. Thanks for sharing, cheers!
These sounds like amazing scotch whiskies! I have had some! I can't wait until I can get the Ardnahoe 5 year old in Canada! Love Islay peated scotch!! Love the Edradour - first one mentioned! Awesome video! Cheers! 🙂
I loved it, love the idea and looking forward to the next episodes cheers 🍻🥃👍
Huzzah! Then lucky 'Ive filmed more :D
Here for the ramble - less fussed about the direction you choose to take. Whatever doesn't burn you out.
Thank you :)
I think non-alcoholic spirits may also be more expensive because you need more herbs to get the same concentration of flavors as water-based distillation is a less efficient process. Regarding the taste, I would certainly not drink them neat, but some like Seedlip that have a "natural" aroma are quite nice in a mixed drink with tonic. It is important not to compare it to regular cocktails, but to other non-alcoholic alternatives like plain tonic water, lemonade etc.
Vaaaalid point...
Like the idea, more please.
Then more you shall have!
Taste cheap
Yes, true
I like the concept. Photos of the pub would be nice, as would better lighting for you.
I have good news for you...
Sort your lighting out John - you're way to handsome to be so dark and noisy...you only need a lamp.
I may have gone shopping...
@@JohnsDrams Much better, great next video too. Give me some options for my next Whisky purchase.
Relax. The segment was ok. You still need the light panel for your talking head bit though. Keep going, your rambling stream of consciousness is really refreshing.
I may have gone overboard on the lighting compensation...
I heard the legend of malort for decades before trying it. Then at a grocery atore tasting I tried it, aftee receiving all of the warnings. So my expectations were in the range of bitter musk. When I tasted it was like yellow grapefruit pith with simple syrup, mixed with floral gin and with a hint of pine. Which isn't that bad compared other spirits and beers. I have had far worse it is better than an several American IPA, low end whiskey, low quality malt liquors, most artificially roasted malt beers, and cheap tequila. I recommend mixing it with st Germain, gin, orange simple syrup, and some club soda. That way you can lean into it's bitter quality to had complexity, like adding grapefruit bitters to sprizer.
Come for the whisky leave with an Airfryer. I guess I need a hobby.
Can the hobby involve air frying things?
Thanks for these recommendations, I’m pretty new to actually appreciating whisky rather than drinking to get drunk. I’m never going to be spending £100+ for a bottle of anything so finding stuff like this is brilliant. Cheers
Happy to help!
what the hell is an airfryer
Good sound
Thank you 😋
Your channel would attract so many more subs if you invested in a light panel. They are informative with a wink of the eye. Nice one.
Working on it!
@@JohnsDrams which one are you looking at?
Good conversation and welcome to hear about different, yet affordable Scotch. Cheers!
Thanks! It seemed only fair to shine a light on a few other drams.
I wish I could access these scotch expressions in Canada. If I can find them in a specialty spirit shop I source out at times they will be a lot more expensive - lots of taxes!
Oy vey.
I enjoyed the vid, so I definitely need a hobby, more listicals please.
How's a 23 -in-one sound?
Old man and long time scotch drinker here. All I can tell you is most blended scotch in the USA has gotten worse. JW Red was a pretty decent drink decades ago. Now it tastes like slightly flavored alcohol. The only JW Scotch I like now are Black and perhaps Double-Black. The rest are not worth the price. You should know that I always preferred Dewar's White label Scotch but that has become completely undrinkable since the company wast taken over by Bicardi. It is just really bad. Oh and BTW- I always drink my Scotch neat.
Good man! Luckily there are blends more than happy to pick up the ball the older blend dropped.
Black & White had some of the best ads in the 80s…they certainly don’t make them like that anymore. Very bold and innovative for the time.
Drank it in the 70’s when I was a teenager with a lemon twist. It’s a classy liquor. I love it. Time for a bottle.
I will never know what they were thinking with the early 00's bottle redesign.
I'm sold.
I had Scottish cream once in the early 90's I've not seen one liquor store in the town I live in that carries Scottish cream. The last clerk had never heard of it. It's true. Scottish cream is so much better.
Edradour too!
You want offensive? Try Chinese Moutai. Not much on the nose, but in the mouth the flavour can only be described as vomit and it clocks in at 53% alcohol.
Well - how can I resist?
@@JohnsDrams Oh and it isn't cheap. Try 375 pounds for a half litre at Hedonism wines according to wine-searcher.
I still enjoy this one. Good to hear your thoughts and sounds like you will not re-buy. Sorry you were down for this one. Cheers!
I think that's a common sentiment now.
@@JohnsDrams I can still get this for "not highway robbery" I just might ... tough call.
Lmfao you killed me on "this can kill a bitch," yeah bro it's a bit more expensive then it should be jw blue taste fantastic but paying 200 us dollars a bottle it is definetly out priced lol
Word
You were much too sober to drink Malort.

@@JohnsDrams it's modern day wonder of the world my co op....last week I perloined 6 bottles of glen kieth distillery edition..single malt Speyside.....10er a bottle. It goes up to 28 30 pounds.. 60 pounds for the crate ......I was pleased with that one too ..nice budget Speyside.....well below it's value...no stated age but its nice. Well worth a tenner.....I'm using it for cocktails but I've had the thumbs up from everyone who's taken it neat. ...comes in a box n everything. Ha.
Malört. Ö not O .
I just got a whole bottle from my brother in US. :)
I had way too high expectations of this (because of Ralfy, First Phil, and plenty others), so I was very disappointed at first, but it grew on me. What I did last week was to pour the rest of the bottle over in an empty 20 cl. I guess about 19 cl, and I topped the bottle with about 1 cl of GlenAllachie 10 (Batch 6). Tried it today, and man… that was special. Like drinking strawberry sauce or something 😂
Oooooooh. Now that I want to try!
Trying to pick up women 🤣😂😂🤣i think I’m lucky enough to not had a whiskey that’s got that nose 😤taste sounding better thanks for the review cheers 🥃I’m definitely subscribe and a MASSIVE fan ( not to be confused as a stalker 🤣)
It's a subtle difference, but an important one!
@@JohnsDrams the closest I've came to this is when I was served grappa from the 70s, it smelled damp rugby boots
Gotta keep Mo in Friskies.
That boy must be kept in the finest of jellied meats and kibbles at all time.
Iv never had a scotch that went full blown egg before
Yeah, it's a fun ol' ride.
I guess good barrels are simply getting hard to come by now-a-times.
Even so...
It's wormwood and wormwood,
Where is the rest? I was enjoying that.
It tastes like a Gypsy curse.
The Best Good Black&white.....Reliable Balanced Budget Frndly.....Super Kool..
Gordon's is great for a Churchill martini. Seriously, it is nice to go back to as a basic gin reference once in a while after spending too long with higher end gins. However, here where I am we still have it in the clear bottle at 43% so I don't know how similar it is to your modern stuff. What I have here sounds a lot more like your 70s bottle.
